PassCard is a database program which stores photos and information
about staff and contractors and can be used to print ID cards.
PassCard includes entries for: staff name; department; staff type (permanent,
temporary, etc.); access areas; validity dates; and issue date; issue number
(to keep track of lost cards); and card number. Any or all of these entries
can be displayed on the card. First aiders and fire wardens can be indicated,
and lists can be printed for quick reference. PassCard can additionally store
information on staff telephone numbers, addresses, dates of birth, training,
and general notes.
Passes can be printed with or without photographs, so that general visitor or
hospitality cards can be made as well as staff ID cards. Company logos can be
printed on the cards, with provision for printing an additional logo for each
department or company. In a multi-company environment each company can have a
completely different pass layout, each with its own database, all running on
the same system.
PassCard is generally used with a specialised card printer such as those made
by Fargo or Eltron, which produces rigid, laminated PVC cards. The cards can
incorporate a magnetic stripe (high or low coercivity, coded from PassCard),
or adhesive backing for use with existing proximity cards. For a low-cost
solution, the Fargo FotoFUN! or photo-quality inkjet can be used as the pass
printer with PassCard's 2-up print facility; the passes will need separate
lamination, but the FotoFUN! can also print postcard and visa sized
photographs.
PassCard uses the TWAIN interface to acquire photographs, which allows easy
connection to nearly every digital camera, video grabber, and scanner on the
market. To maximise compatibility with other programs PassCard offers a wide
range of input and output filters for images. These include JPEG (JPG), ZSoft
Paintbrush (PCX), Windows Bitmap (BMP), Tagged Image File Format (TIF),
TrueVision Targa (TGA), CompuServe Bitmap (GIF), and Device Independent Bitmap
(DIB) files. PassCard can also save an image as either a 16 or 256 colour
greyscale image.
Once a photograph has been acquired it is saved into the database as a JPEG
image in order to store high quality pictures in the minimum amount of hard
disk space. To get the best results from the photographs, PassCard has several
image manipulation tools including, image rotation, image cropping, and
brightness and contrast adjustment.
To reduce form filling PassCard can print a customised profile (including
photograph and company logo) for each staff member. Report lists (for example
to list all staff in Accounts) can be constructed and printed easily using
the SQL Query facility to turn the stored data into information.
Finally, PassCard offers 3 levels of password protection to safeguard the
records in the database.
PassCard was developed from an original program called ID-Mate. During its
development many useful and unique features have been added by working in
close partnership with the end users.
