Q
Can I use the PC-60 to make signs longer than 54" (1380mm)?
A
It is possible to print signs longer than 54" by reducing the
print resolution from 600 to 300 or 150dpi (NB. This is assuming that
your application supports pages of this size). These are Roland's
figures for length:
Software |
Resolution |
Length (max) |
Illustrator 7 |
600 dpi |
692.5mm |
300 dpi |
1385mm |
150 dpi |
2770mm |
CorelDraw 7 |
600 dpi |
1263.5mm |
300 dpi |
2650mm |
150 dpi |
3276.7mm |
Larger signs can be printed by tiling the print (see your application
instructions). To cut (no printing) longer signs you will need some
sign-making software. Our own PostCut, set up to drive a Roland 1100,
does the job nicely.

Tip.
CorelDRAW users may find an out of memory error when printing large
signs even when there appears to be plenty of hard disk space. This seems
to be caused by Corel writing a huge temporary file (around 1Gb in some
cases!). To get around this problem try one of the following
1) Reduce the resolution of the print:
2) Split or tile the sign into 2 or more pieces
3) Rearrange your hard drive to leave at least 1Gb of free space on drive C
(or whichever drive Windows is on) - this is much easier under FAT 32.

Q
What thickness of outline will make my ColorCAMM cut?
A
In CorelDRAW a line thickness of 0.001 inches seems to work for all
driver versions of all ColorCAMMs, although Roland recommend 0.001mm.
For Illustrator Roland recommend a stroke weight of 0pt.
Q
How do I get coloured outlines to cut?
A
The trick to cutting with coloured outlines (non-black) is to make
sure that the outline colour is set in the application using RGB
(not CMYK), and matches the chosen colour in the driver.

Q
Can I use ALPS/CITIZEN wax ribbons on the PC-60?
A
Yes, but because the ColorCamm uses a different head temperature
to the ALPS printers, ribbons may stick to gloss vinyl, causing them
to snap. For this reason it is best to use matt vinyl.
Q
Is the output truly outdoor-durable?
A
Yes. When the resin ribbon used on good clean vinyl it should
resist sun, rain and abrasion for a matter of years. In extreme
conditions you might wish to varnish over it.
Q
Do I need a RIP program to drive the ColorCAMM?
A
RIP software is claimed to print better and faster than Roland's
own driver. We are running the lastest CorelDRAW (version 8) on a
fast Pentium with lots of RAM and disk space, and Roland's driver
works fine for us.

Q
Can I drive a PC-60 from a Macintosh?
A
Yes, but the software is will cost you more - enough more, in fact,
to buy a cheap PC!
Q
How does my PNC-5000 (or PC-50) know whether it is using a single
or 4 colour ribbon?
A
There are 3 holes on back of the cartridges that tell the ColorCAMM
which type of ribbon you are using. It also differentiates between
resin and wax.
